How to choose a Bachelor’s programme

It’s not easy to figure out what you want to do with your life. One huge step many of us take towards becoming the person we strive to be, is choosing a Bachelor’s programme at university. Usually this is the first huge thing we get to decide all by ourselves: going to elementary school was mandatory, so was going to high school. Maybe we had to pick some courses in high school to specialize in, but many of us were still guided by our parents or by the things our friends chose to do. We were, after all, at a fragile age. Not anymore. This time, the choice is yours and only yours. But what do you do when you have this choice, but you really, really, REALLY don’t know which programme to choose? Well, you go check out the website of the UvA Intreeweek of course! To relieve you of your stress, we have provided you with a guide to finding out what you want to do! Are you ready? Here we go!

Step 1. Find an idol

Anyone who claims to have never seen a person and thought ‘Wow, I wish my life was like that!’, is a liar. A big, fat, phony liar. Everyone has at one point or another seen something in someone’s life that they admired or of which they thought: hey, it would be pretty cool if I could do that too. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a person you know. It could be a celebrity, it could be your best friend’s mom, it could be this crazy lady that you met on your way to England on the bus who turned out to have lived a pretty awesome life. Whoever it is, they took steps to get to where they are. They didn’t just one day wake up and have the life that they have. They had many jobs, many experiences etc. before they actually could live the life that you so fondly admire. So, find and idol. Come on now, think of someone. This is a crucial step before we can get to the next part.

Step 2. Stalk them like crazy

Okay, so don’t literally stalk them, because that is a.) wrong and b.) very illegal. However, do try to find out how they got to the life they lead. What kind of jobs did they have? What did they do during their college life? Try to find out as many things as possible. This is usually easier if it’s someone you know because you can just, you know, ask them. But even for many famous people it is possible to find out through their Wikipedia page at least some of the things they did with their life.

Step 3. Repeat step 1 and 2 until satisfied

Surely there isn’t only one person’s life that makes you think: wow that’s pretty cool, I want that. So go ahead and make a mind map of all these people’s life. Soon enough you’ll either start to see some patterns emerging (many of the people’s lives you admire work in a similar field) or you’ll see something that piques your interest.

And lastly, try to relax. Choosing a Bachelor’s programme isn’t the end of your live. You can always change courses if you don’t like your course and you can always tweak your course in a way to your liking by doing a minor during or after your Bachelor. So in the famous words of Mika: Relax, take is easy.
